Black Canyon Trail
An 80-mile IMBA Epic through Arizona's rugged backcountry.
About This Trail
The Black Canyon Trail is an 80-mile IMBA Epic-designated singletrack running from the Prescott National Forest boundary south to Carefree Highway, and the closest trailhead to Anthem is just 10 miles up I-17. This is a nationally significant trail that follows routes used by prehistoric Native American travelers and traders, winding through Sonoran Desert landscape with saguaro forests, rugged canyons, and views of the Bradshaw Mountains to the west. The riding is characterized by bench-cut singletrack with moderate grades, rocky sections, loose soils, and constant elevation changes — it demands fitness and intermediate-level bike handling. Most riders break the BCT into segments using multiple trailheads along I-17, but the full trail is a bucket-list bikepacking route that typically takes three days. The Emery Henderson Trailhead near New River gives Anthem riders quick access to some excellent southern segments. This is BLM land, so there are no entry fees and dispersed camping is allowed. If you want to feel genuinely remote while being minutes from home, the BCT delivers that experience better than anything else nearby.

Riding Tips
Start at Emery Henderson Trailhead for the closest access from Anthem — ride north toward Table Mesa for a great out-and-back.
Carry more water than you think — there is no reliable water on the trail, especially in the southern segments.
If bikepacking the full route, plan water caches at road crossings like Big Bug (mile 12) and Gloriana (mile 32).
The trail surface gets loose and rocky in places — run wider tires (2.3"+) and keep your weight back on descents.
